How does an antique auction work?

An antique auction is a process where antiques are presented to potential buyers, and interested bidders compete by offering prices. Before the auction, each item is usually examined, described, and given an estimated value or starting price. The items may be displayed in a catalog or preview so bidders can learn about their condition, history, and other details. During the auction, the auctioneer introduces each item and begins the bidding. Buyers place bids, and the price increases as participants compete. When no higher bid is offered, the auctioneer closes the bidding, and the item is sold to the highest bidder, subject to any applicable auction terms. Afterward, the successful buyer completes payment and arranges collection or delivery of the item.
